How should a manufacturer connect a second site or warehouse to its IT?

The short answer: to connect a second site or warehouse, most small manufacturers need four things. These are a business broadband line, a firewall, proper cabling and Wi-Fi, and a secure route to the systems at head office. Rural broadband has also improved. The National Broadband Plan offers a minimum of 500 Mbps to homes, farms and businesses in its intervention area. Its main build finished in Meath and Westmeath by July 2026, and Louth and Cavan are due in October 2026.

It suits anyone who needs to connect a second site, such as a new unit, warehouse or dispatch yard. It covers the office IT, network and phones around production, not the production systems themselves.

What do you need to connect a second site?

Think of the new site in four layers:

• A broadband line sized for the people and devices that will use it.
• A business firewall, managed alongside the one at head office.
• Structured cabling for fixed PCs, printers and phones, plus Wi-Fi across the floor and yard.
• A secure route back to the systems your team needs, whether they sit in Microsoft 365 or on a server.

Plan all four before you move in if you can. Cabling is far easier to run before racking, machines or stock arrive. Broadband orders can take time too, so check availability as soon as you have the address.

Which broadband suits a second site?

Start with the Eircode. National Broadband Ireland runs a wholesale network, so you order through a broadband provider. According to the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, businesses in the rollout area can check their Eircode on the NBI website. The same update says the network had passed 89% of about 566,000 premises by the end of July 2026.

A few points apply wherever the site is:

• Size the line for uploads as well as downloads. Video calls, cloud backup and file syncing all send data out.
• Add a backup connection from a different provider, or a mobile broadband router, if a lost line would stop dispatch.
• Ask for a fixed public IP address if you plan a permanent link between the two firewalls.

How should a second site connect to head office systems?

The answer depends on where your systems live. Most manufacturers fall into one of two patterns, or a mix of both.

Cloud-first

If email, files and Teams already run in Microsoft 365, each site mostly needs a good internet line. Staff sign in with multi-factor authentication wherever they work. Adding a site then comes down to broadband, Wi-Fi and devices.

A permanent link between sites

Your accounts, stock or planning software may run on a server at head office. If so, a site-to-site VPN between the two firewalls lets the new site reach it. Talk to the software supplier first. Some systems need a steady connection, or they offer their own remote access method. Keep machines and their controllers off the office Wi-Fi, and agree any connection to them with the equipment supplier.

Security matters on both routes. The Data Protection Commission’s data security guidance calls a firewall essential wherever there is external connectivity. It also advises assessing the need for remote access before granting it, and considering multi-factor authentication for that access.

Backup needs depend on where your data lives. A Microsoft 365 backup covers email, OneDrive and SharePoint. It doesn’t automatically cover a server at either site, files saved on local PCs, line-of-business software or every other cloud platform. If the new site gets its own server or storage, add it to the backup plan from day one.

What else does a warehouse or new unit need?

Once you connect a second site, the day-to-day details matter as much as the link itself:

• Wi-Fi planned around the building. Racking, metal cladding and stock can all weaken the signal, so a survey before fitting access points shows where coverage will drop.
• A separate guest network for drivers, contractors and visitors, kept apart from business devices.
• Phones on the same system as head office. A VoIP system can let staff transfer calls between sites and share one main number.
• Individual logins on shared dispatch PCs, with the same monitoring and patching as the office.
• A named contact at each site who knows where the firewall and network cabinet sit.
